How to choose a refurbished laptop
Check these five essentials before you buy.
Processor
Newer processors generally offer better performance. The Surface Laptop 5 has a 12th-generation Core i5, the IdeaPad 3 has an 11th-generation Core i5, and the Acer has an 8th-generation Core i7. Older chips can still handle basic tasks but may struggle with heavier multitasking.
Memory (RAM)
8GB is a practical starting point for study and office tasks. Consider 16GB if you often run several apps at once or want more headroom for future use.
Storage
An SSD helps a laptop start up and open files quickly. Check the product listing for both the storage type and capacity.
Operating system
Windows 10 stopped receiving free security updates in October 2025. Check that your chosen laptop supports the operating system you need. The IdeaPad listing specifies Windows 11.
Warranty and returns
Check the individual product's warranty and the returns policy. The laptop category states up to 18 months' warranty, with the exact term shown on each product.

| Software | The widest choice, including most business software | Apple's own apps and most popular software |

If you're not sure, ask whether your course or workplace needs a particular program. If it does, check that it runs on the system you choose.
