Best Phone Chargers and Power Banks in Ireland: Which One Do You Need?

Best Phone Chargers and Power Banks in Ireland Which One Do You Need

For most phones, a 20W to 25W USB-C wall charger is all you need, and it costs from €14.99. The Cygnett 25W at €19.99 is the best all-rounder because it suits recent iPhones and many Samsung Galaxy phones. If you have an iPhone 12 or newer, a magnetic power bank that snaps onto the back, like the Blue Star MagSafe-compatible power bank at €19.99, is the easiest way to top up on the go.

How to choose a wall charger

1. Match the port. All the chargers here have a USB-C port. Recent iPhones (iPhone 15 and newer) and most Android phones use USB-C. The iPhone 14 and older use Lightning, so you'll need a USB-C to Lightning cable as well.

2. Match the wattage. A higher wattage charges faster, up to the limit your phone accepts. A bigger charger won't harm a phone, but it won't charge it any faster than the phone allows. As a guide:

Phone Typical fast charging A good charger
iPhone 8 to iPhone 14 About 20W 20W
iPhone 15 and newer 20W or more 20W to 25W
Galaxy A-series Often up to 25W 25W
Galaxy S-series Often 25W 25W
Galaxy Ultra models Higher, 45W or more A 45W+ charger

These figures are a general guide, so check your phone's specification. All the chargers here are 20W or 25W, so they suit most phones except the Ultra models.

3. Check the plug. Ireland uses the same three-pin plug as the UK, so a UK plug fits Irish sockets.

4. Buy from a shop you can return to. A poor-quality charger can be a safety risk, so buy a known brand and check the warranty and the returns policy.

How to choose a power bank

1. Capacity. A 5000mAh power bank gives roughly one charge for many phones, and a little less when you charge wirelessly. If you need more than one top-up, look for a larger power bank.

2. Magnetic or cable? A magnetic (MagSafe-style) power bank snaps onto the back of an iPhone 12 or newer and charges wirelessly, with no cable. Android phones and older iPhones can still use the power bank with a cable where the model has one, but they won't snap on without a magnetic case or ring.

3. Your case. A thick case can weaken the magnet, so choose a thin case if you want a firm hold.

4. Speed. Wireless charging is slower than a cable. The ANG A28 also has 20W PD fast charging for use with a cable.

Is it the charger, or the battery?

If your phone runs out of battery quickly, a new charger won't fix it. The battery may be worn. Every refurbished phone at Fone4U has 85%+ battery health, checked before sale, but an older phone's battery will wear over time. If yours drains fast, read our guides to battery health checks on iPhone and how to replace or upgrade your iPhone battery, or book an iPhone battery replacement or a Samsung battery replacement. Students get €10 off any repair in store.

If your battery looks swollen or bulging, stop using the phone and read our guide to Samsung battery swelling.

Safe charging tips

  • Use a charger and cable that suit your phone, from a brand you trust.
  • Don't use a damaged cable or plug.
  • Don't charge a phone under a pillow or on a bed, where heat can build up.
  • If your phone gets very hot while charging, unplug it.
  • Take off a thick case if the phone is getting warm on a wireless charger.

Frequently Asked Questions

What charger do I need for my iPhone?

A 20W or 25W USB-C charger is a good choice for most recent iPhones. You'll also need the right cable: USB-C to USB-C for the iPhone 15 and newer, or USB-C to Lightning for the iPhone 14 and older.

What charger do I need for my Samsung?

A 25W USB-C charger suits many Galaxy A-series and S-series phones. The Ultra models can charge faster with a more powerful charger, so check your phone's specification.

Specifications: Will a UK plug charger work in Ireland?

Yes. Ireland uses the same three-pin plug as the UK, so a UK plug fits Irish sockets.

Can a higher-wattage charger damage my phone?

No. Your phone only draws the power it can accept, so a higher-wattage charger just won't charge it any faster.

Do magnetic power banks work with Android?

They charge wirelessly with Android phones that support wireless charging but won't snap on without a magnetic case or ring. Check which cable options each power bank has.

How many charges does a 5000mAh power bank give?

Roughly one full charge for many phones, and a little less over wireless charging.

What is the lowest-priced charger?

The Cygnett 20W USB-C wall charger is at €14.99.

Can I pay in installments?

Yes. You can use Humm or Klarna at checkout.
